World’s largest single-brand restaurant chain, Subway, would make entry into the Kenyan market  in August thus tapping into growing consumer spending by an expanding middle class.

According to Business Daily Africa, CJ Bak, director of Liberty Eagle disclosed plans to launch at least two outlets by the end of the year, as franchise holder for Subway restaurants in Kenya.

“The first restaurant is expected to open by August of this year. We then expect to open at least two more this year with a goal of 20 stores over seven years,” Bak said.

He added that the first store would be opened in Kenya’s capital.

“Liberty Eagle already has six Subway restaurants in Tanzania. The penetration model is to have finance managers ultimately own and operate the Subway stores,” Business Daily Africa reported.

According to report, Kenya’s hotel and restaurants sector has grown at an average rate of 5.9 per cent in the past three years to a total value of Sh20.79 billion ($240 million) in 2011, from Sh18.99 billion in 2009.

In 2008, when the economy was hit by post-election violence, the sector contracted by 38.6 per cent, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics data shows.

Subway is an American restaurant franchise that primarily sells fresh, healthy fast food. The company, has franchised about 39,000 stores worldwide.
