Russia, which is also keen on investing in Africa like Japan and China, has committed to provide Kenya with fertilizer at reasonable prices, Business Daily reported on Monday.

This is the foremost victory for President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has always been keen to strike a joint venture with Moscow.

Business Daily quoted Russian deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Kozak, as saying the agreement will Russia to give Kenya fertiliser straight from producers.

President Kenyatta and Kozak had a meeting at the on-going IAAF World Championships.

According to Business Daily, Kenya’s fertiliser requirements are approximately 500,000 tonnes a year.

It is understood that Felix Koskei, the agriculture secretary, will stopover in Moscow to kick start bilateral talks about the deal.

Russia is among the world’s topmost exporters of fertilizer and is also well-known for its skill in managing fertiliser-making factories.

“In the short-term, I would like to encourage Russian manufacturers and exporters to supply the required high quality fertiliser to Kenya,” Business Daily quoted President Kenyatta as saying.

Kenyatta was speaking at a gathering with representatives of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Moscow at the weekend.

But he also urged the Russians to acquire Kenya’s coffee, tea flowers and vegetables.
