Burundi private bank Bancobu s.a., Netherland-based investment platform PSI (Private Sector Investment) and Burundi Farmer Trade Company have launched a new company, Burundi Brewery s.a., in northern part of Burundi.
Jean Christian Kavakure, the Manager of Burundi Brewery said that the company, which started operations in December 201, will produce 4 main products – bottled water (Sangwe Burundi), a banana wine called Soma Burundi and others.
According to the manager, the company started operations with $6.5 million.
“All the products will be “Made in Burundi”” he said adding that the new investment is a pan African effort that will allow fruit farmers to sell their products to the brewery.
The Manager said that doing business in Burundi has become easier than ever, because of the efforts of the Investment Promotion Authority (API) that has reduced many steps towards having license to invest in Burundi.
Burundi is trying to rise from economy difficulties after more than 10 years of civil war that took lives of many citizens. The East African country was ranked as the main reformer in Africa in doing business and was ranked 5th in the world by 2013 Doing Business report.
In October 2012, Burundi organized a donor meeting in Geneva where it tried raise at least $2.1 billion to accelerate its growth.
Early this year the UN systems in Burundi pledged $600 million to help citizens to overcome economy difficulties in 4 years. Meanwhile, Burundi is attracting more investments after reforms and security recovery.
Burundi Brewery will face another competitor which is Brarudi s.a..
The brewery becomes the first private company to open its doors in Burundi, since its independence in 1962.
