Ethiopian revenue for leather and leather products exports totalled 71.1 million US dollars over the last seven months according to the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry.

Communications Director with the Ministry, Melaku Taye, said the revenue raised in the reported period is 62% higher than that earned in the same period in the last fiscal year.

Mr Melaku indicated, however, that the revenue earned is less than the targeted sum due to challenges associated with discovering new markets, the international economic situation and problems with management.

Domestic leather tanneries were unable to achieve their projected exports because they primary attention has been to supply the national market according to Melaku.

Corporate Communications Director with the Leather Industry Development Institute, Birhanu Serjebo explained that effort is being channelled towards $206 million dollar from the leather industry this financial year.

The institution is working in collaboration with Indian bodies to enhance the market for Ethiopian leather goods on the international market noted Birhanu.
